Pasco couple produce film targeting dietary fat
Published: October 14, 2009
Updated: 11:22 am
What you don't know cannot only hurt you, but if you do it long enough, it can kill you before your time.
At 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16, FLOW Yoga, 7711 Grand Blvd., Port Richey, will present a free screening of a documentary film produced by a Land O'Lakes couple that examines how Americans are eating themselves to death without even realizing it.
David and Robyn Burton debuted their film, "InGREEDients," at the 2009 Gasparilla International Film Festival in February, where it drew rave reviews. It has since picked up awards and buzz along the independent film circuit.
Filmmaking had always been a sideline interest for David while he makes his living as a registered nurse in the cardiac care unit at Community Hospital.
Like the rest of America, David Burton became familiar with the phrases "hydrogenated oil" and "trans fats" several years ago. Looking back, he admits he was shocked at, for someone in his profession, how much he didn't know about hydrogenated oil and its long-term effects on the human body.
Hydrogenated oil is oil that has been infused with hydrogen. The result is trans fat, or "fake fat," convenient to processed food manufacturers because of its versatility and long shelf life.
For decades, it was even thought to be a healthy alternative to natural fat - the basis of the butter versus margarine debate. But now, the evidence suggests that it is far more detrimental to human health than natural fat.
As he learned more about hydrogenated oils and seeing their effects firsthand every day, Burton was compelled to take his filmmaking to the next level.
"InGREEDients" offers a primer on the prevalence of hydrogenated oil in our food. The premise of the film, you are what you eat, plays a role in the rising rates of heart disease, diabetes and obesity. The three are interconnected, and are the direct result of the consumption of too much trans fat in the form of hydrogenated oils.
The Burtons spent more than two years traveling the country as their jobs permitted, researching and doing on-camera interviews with experts such as Dr. Walter Willet, chairman of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Dr. Valentin Fuster, director of Mount Sinai Heart in New York City and past president of the American Heart Association and of the World Heart Federation.
"We talk about the food industry, the FDA, the government, the medical industry," Burton said, all of which have a stake in the status quo. But the film isn't meant to be simply an indictment of these entities. Ultimately each person is responsible for what they put in their bodies.
"That's why our slogan is 'The choice is yours,' " Burton said.
"InGREEDients" offers tips on reading and interpreting nutritional labels. Counting fat and carbohydrates are worth noting, Burton said, but seeing how many ingredients with long, chemical names is what to really watch out for. Healthy Cooking for Two ( or just you) low fat recipes With Half The fuss And Double The Taste is and excellent resource for heathy cooking and no hard to pronounce names.
Burton offers a simple rule: "If you can't pronounce it, don't eat it."
The Burtons have taken on a partner, Russell Hess, whose main duty is to market the film. So far they've had better luck finding interest overseas than here in America. TV companies in Russia and South Africa have shown strong interest in airing "InGREEDients."
Burton doesn't hide that he'd love to see "InGREEDients" follow in the footsteps of its likeminded predecessor "Supersize Me" and gain wide notoriety in this country, and not just for the sake of his filmmaking career, but because the more people who see the film, the more good it can do. The Burtons have an outreach program that includes free public screenings, donated copies of the movie and free health consciousness events with an assortment of guest speakers.
Friday's screening at Flow Yoga is such an event. Burton will be on hand to sign DVD copies, and other nutritional experts will be there to add to the discussion.
Space is limited; reservations are strongly suggested. Call 727-848-7283.

Healthier cooking oil options

Are you bored of using olive oil for all your cooking needs? Here are some other options for you to
Avocado oil: Pressed from the fleshy pulp surrounding the avocado pit, this nutty-flavoured oil, like olive oil, is rich in monounsaturated fats. It has a high smoke point, which makes it good for sautéing or stir-frying fish, chicken, or vegetables. It's also delicious in vinaigrette dressings or drizzled over vegetables.
Grapeseed oil: Extracted from the seeds of grapes, and typically imported from France, Italy, or Switzerland, this oil also has a high smoke point, which makes it good for sautéing or stir-frying. It is equally delicious in salad dressings. Some of the imported oils have a rather grape-y flavour, but many are quite bland or even nutty tasting. Try a few to see what you like best.
Nut oils: The good thing about nut oils, such as almond, hazelnut, macadamia, peanut, pecan, pistachio, and walnut oils, is that they provide the same monounsaturated fats that are found in the nuts themselves (but they don't contain the fiber). Since overheating will diminish the flavour of nut oils, avoid sautéing and use them instead in salad dressings or drizzled over cooked pasta or vegetables. Nut oils can go rancid quickly, so store them in the refrigerator to keep them fresh.
Pumpkin seed oil: Made from roasted pumpkin seeds, this very flavourful, dark green, opaque oil is best used in combination with lighter oils for sautéing or in salad dressings. It can also be used undiluted to add a distinctive flavor to fish or steamed vegetables.
Safflower oil: It contains more polyunsaturated fats than any other oil. It also has a high smoke point, which makes it fine for sautéing or stir-frying. You can mix it with more flavourful oils for heart-healthy salad dressings, too.

This Koala Bear Love Eucalyptus Flowers
The Many Health Benefits of Eucalyptus Oil
Are koala bears onto something? Could be; they eat nothing but eucalyptus leaves, and I've never heard them complaining of chest congestion. While we humans would be missing out on a lot of essential nutrients if we ate eucalyptus exclusively, we can learn a thing or two from our cute, cuddly, marsupial friends.
Uses of Eucalyptus
People have been using eucalyptus medicinally for a long time. You’re probably already using eucalyptus – its one of the active ingredients in many lozenges and cough drops. It’s also in many brands of mouthwash. The medical benefits of eucalyptus were probably first discovered by the Australian Aboriginals, who used it to reduce fever, ease congestion and speed recovery from wounds.
Eucalyptus for the Soul
Lots of people use eucalyptus for psychological stress as well. It stimulates the mind and relaxes the body. So, you can use eucalyptus to replace some of the over the counter medications you use when you’re sick, and add it to your daily routine to have a more harmonious, balanced and productive life.
Eucalyptus Oil
The best way to harness the healing and soothing power of eucalyptus is by using eucalyptus oil. Eucalyptus oil is an essential oil derived from the leaves of the eucalyptus plant and contains a high concentration of the active chemical, eucalyptol. You should never ingest eucalyptus oil without explicit instructions from your doctor or nateropath. The safest, most effective and most popular methods of delivery for eucalytus oil are topical application and fume inhalation.
Eucalyptus and Congestion
Massage eucalyptus oil into your chest to soothe bronchial congestion. Or add a few drops of it to you steam humidifier. The fumes will get the gunk in your lungs and sinuses moving. Don't have a steam humidifier? Sleeping with a bag of dried eucalyptus leaves augmented with some oil in your pillow case is another great way to clear up that congestion.
Cooling Effect of Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus has a cooling effect, too. Rub a couple of drops on your temples to ease a headache or reduce fever. Feeling overwhelmed or stressed but don't have a headache or a fever? That's okay -- applying eucalyptus oil has a soothing, calming, tingling effect that can increase mental clarity and and induce a sense of serenity.
Eucalyptus, the Antibiotic
Eucalyptus oil also has a strong antibacterial effect. It's one of the natural antibiotics. Eucalyptus is esspecially handy for fighting dental plaque and gingivitis, that’s why they put it in moutwash. When applied topically to wounds, eucalyptus oil speeds healing by killing off invading bacteria (never put eucalyptus oil on an open wound, though, or a sunburn -- it'll burn like crazy!).
As if all this weren't enough, eucalyptus oil works great as an insect repellant too and soothes joint and muscle pain from tension and arthritis.
Get hip to what the aboriginals have know for millennia: koala bears are more than just adorable – they’re onto something!

Patchouli oil - A rich, lingering fragrance
Patchouli oil, Latin name pogostemon cablin, has a deep, earthy scent that can give a wonderful aroma when evaporated in an aromatherapy diffuser or oil burner. Throughout history, since ancient times, wherever patchouli plants have grown, the richly perfumed aroma has been used in incense and has been widely traded. Patchouli pure essential oil has a number of therapeutic qualities and aromatherapy benefits, for both the body and mind. This fragrant aromatherapy oil is a natural aphrodisiac and relaxant. Additionally, it has antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal abilities.
Patchouli essential oil, whether used in a bath, oil burner or aromatherapy massage oil, can be useful in relieving the symptoms of stress-related conditions and emotional disorders. When the powerful aroma molecules are inhaled, or absorbed into the body via the skin, they can ease nervous exhaustion and help lift feelings of depression or anxiety. Patchouli oil can also be diluted in a carrier oil for use in aromatherapy skin care products. Aromatherapists use this plant essence to treat acne, dermatitis and other skin complaints.
Because patchouli has cytophylactic properties, it can be used to aid in the healing of scars and wounds. It can also have regenerating effects on wrinkles, aging skin and stretch marks. In an aromatherpy hair tonic, patchouli oil can be a good ingredient to use to combat oily hair or dandruff. This therapeutic grade essential oil is good for treating fungal conditions such as athletes foot. Like citronella, eucalyptus and lemongrass essential oil, patchouli also works as a natural insect repellent.

Your Own Brand Designer Mens Colone
Looking at the flask of the Men's Colone to the right you would think It's expensive, and actually it is. But you don't have to pay $75-$200 to smell good. Check out this recipe for men's colone using Natural Oils. You can literally make your own designer colone!. When ladies smell you( and belive me they will smell you) and say "what colone are you wearing".You can say "this is my brand name". (your name) Musk or what ever you want to call it.Try it and and give me feedback. God Bless.
Men's Cologne Recipe
This recipe makes a refreshing, masculine cologne for men.
Ingredients:
- 3.5 oz. High Proof Vodka or Perfumer's Slcohol.
- 22 drops Bergamot, Mandarin or 15 drops Lime
- 15 drops Patchouli
- 5 drops Bay Laurel
- 3 drops Black Pepper or Ginger
- 5 drops Oakmoss Absolute or 2-3 drops Vetiver
- 1-2 drops of Neroli (optional)
Directions: Add 3.5 oz. high proof vodka or perfumer's alcohol to a clean, sterile 4 oz. glass bottle. It is preferable if the bottle has a sprayer top. Add the oils. Shake well. Allow the cologne to rest for several days, shaking the bottle 1-2 times a day. This will allow the oils to blend and mellow out prior to first use.
You can try substituting some of the alcohol for water if you have a sensitivity to alcohol or simply prefer to use less.
Experiment by changing the essential oils that you include in this flexible recipe. Be sure to follow all safety guidelines and check the contraindications for each essential oil prior to using them in your recipes. Refer to AromaWeb's Aromatic Blending Guide for ideas on how to create the perfect cologne fragrance for yourself.
To Use: Shake the cologne well prior to each use and apply as you would other colognes. Play it safe and for a few days after the cologne is ready for use, only apply it to a small area inside your forearm. This is similar to a "skin patch test" and helps ensure that you don't have an irritation to any of the oils. It is important that you shake the cologne before each use because essential oils do not fully dissolve in alcohol. Alcohol still contains some water. The higher the proof of vodka that you use, the more alcohol concentration the vodka has. If you forget to shake the cologne prior to each use, the essential oils will not remain evenly distrubted each time you spray, and you risk having applications where too high of an essential oil concentration disperses onto your skin.

Natural oils Make the Best Household Cleaners
It simple to make your own earth friendly household cleaners. Why use products loaded with chemicals that can potentially cause cancer and pollute our water supply? Using a few key ingredients you can make your own for pennies per use. The best part is the ingredients don't contain harmful chemicals and most of what you need you can find in your local food market.
What you will need to get started;
Vinegar
Water
Spray bottles
Essential oils (tea tree, peppermint, lemon, orange, lavender-you can find these at amazon.com in a sampler kit
Baking soda
Borax
To make an easy multi purpose spray cleaner just fill half a spray bottle with vinegar. Add water until it's almost full (about an inch from the top). Add in 1 tbsp of liquid soap and 30 drops of essential oils. Shake and voila! This spray is useful from the kitchen to the bathroom. It is a great cleaner and cheap and easy to make. You can combine essential oils or use them singly.
Essential oils have antifungal, antiseptic and antibacterial properties so it's important to get quality oils. It may be a bit of an investment but once you have them they will last a very long time.
For harder jobs you can mix the baking soda with a bit of water (equal parts) to make a good scouring scrub. This is good for gunky counters and the bathtub. If you have something especially gross to clean you can add a bit of borax to the mixture. (like the toilets)
You can use straight vinegar for disinfecting. Washing floors and basically any surface in your home. Vinegar neutralizes odors and kills germs.
For an easy carpet powder use 1 cup of baking soda and add in about 25 drops of an essential oil of your choice. Mix well with a fork and let sit overnight. Sprinkle on your carpet and enjoy!
For windows use straight vinegar. Be sure and recycle your newspapers for a streak free windows and mirrors.
To make an easy room spray you can use water in a spray bottle with a little essential oils mixed in. You also might want to burn a teaspoon of essential oil over low heat on your stove in a quart of water. Orange in lovely for this!
Making your own cleaners makes cleaning a bit less of a chore. Especially when you know you are keeping your family and the planet safe from harmful chemicals.
Be sure to tell your friends! Or better yet surprise someone with a bottle of your own homemade cleaner and the directions on how to make and use their own.
Be sure to label your creations and keep out of reach of children and pets. Just because it's natural dozen't make it edible!

Benifits of Peppermint, Eucalyptus,Lavender,Lemon
By HELOISE King Features Syndicate
A wonderful aroma can make a home feel so inviting, and it’s so easy to create a relaxing or uplifting mood with just a few drops of essential oil.
Essential oils are more than just fragrance; they are pure and come from plants, so they share some of the same characteristics. For example:
• A drop or two of eucalyptus oil can make your shower feel like a spa. Turn on the hot water, put a few drops directly into the spray of water coming out of the shower head, and the eucalyptus scent will mix with the steamy water to relax you. Just don’t get it in your eyes!
• Put a few drops of lavender oil on a dryer sheet or old face cloth, and your laundry will have a fresh, flowery fragrance.
• Place a drop or two of peppermint oil on a paper towel or tissue and tuck it in your running shoes or work boots to keep them fresh-smelling.
• Oil of cedar is a great freshener for a pet’s bed when placed on the underside of the pillow.
• Keep a small bottle of lemon oil by the kitchen sink to add a drop on your sponge to wipe the sink after rinsing. What is amazing is that you only need a drop or two.
